Welcome to the Slate Rigg Farm Bed and
Breakfast and Self Catering Holiday Cottages. In the Yorkshire Dales you’ll find the
historic village of Ripley near Harrogate in the beautiful Dale of Nidderdale
and overlooking Ripley deer parks and surrounding area is our farm. With
glorious views, we are just a mile from the village located on the peaceful
but popular bridle way - The Nidderdale Way. You are assured of a restful
night’s sleep to help you relax and enjoy your stay in North Yorkshire. We have two Bed and Breakfast rooms in
Slate Rigg Farmhouse and have recently converted an
old cart shed into two self catering holiday cottages. They have wonderful
views and are ideal for exploring the Dales and perhaps a little retail
therapy in Harrogate or York!
We are ideally situated for local
attractions such as Fountains Abbey, Ripley Castle, Harewood
House and local beauty spots such as Brimham Rocks,
Stump Cross Caverns and Nidderdale itself as an Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty. We offer bed and breakfast for short
term stay or if you are looking for somewhere to stay where you can relax for
a longer time we have just completed two new cottages Bramble and Buttercup,
there is a minimum stay but if you only need a night or two the bed and
breakfast rooms could be right for you. Bramble and Buttercup Cottages
Bookings can be made directly with ourselves by either phone (we have a answer
phone in case we’re out working on the farm, please leave a message and we’ll
get back to you as soon as we come in) or email via the link on the contact

News: 07/10/2011 OK I’m ready
for the weather to act normally now, just as I was starting to put away the
summer clothes, out they came again – it’s what I call teasing! Kip has
finally stopped moulting and is acting like a young pup again, my living room
carpet has recovered once more, those of you with dogs will understand.
Claire has started teaching, she says she has the best of both worlds, year
7’s who at least for one year should be good and year 12’s who actually want
to learn the subjects they’ve chosen! As for the newly weds – they’re still smiling! 06/05/2011 Sorry for the
delay, the web host has been down – nothing to do with me I might say! Anyway where did
it go – they’ve already had their second month anniversary. If you want to
know, the weather was wonderful! We came out of church and the sun was
shining down as if it was high summer. Are we lucky or what. The times that
Keith and I have been told we ‘scrub up well` leaves me wondering what we
normally look like! But I think they were compliments. As for the speeches, all three were
excellent, no embarrassing moments, just funny and true – wonderful. The day was perfect
even down to Claire catching the bouquet (and that was with Vicki with her
back turned and eyes shut!) Sorry Ed. We had a day to remember and I’m sure
my feet will forgive me eventually – I’m not really a high heels kind of
mother-in-law! 19.02.2011 Well, I can
nearly count the days to the wedding on two hands now. Today it’s snowing so
we’re looking forward to watching the weeks weather on Sundays Countryfile.
Oh the anticipation of the English weather! Keith and Shak
are practising their speeches, both trying to see who can embarrass Vicki
most. This winter Kip
has filled out a little, middle aged spread I think. The dog and I have taken
up jogging in anticipation of this and the fact I want my wedding outfit to
fit. We love running along the Nidderdale Way but are very much fair weather
runners! Claire’s
enjoying her P.G.C.E. course, although very hard work, she’s keeping life and
soul together with the help and cooking skills of Ed. 19.09.2010 Historically it’s said when Nidderdale Show has been and gone so has the summer. As the show is tomorrow I think the saying’s spot on. It’s definitely ‘back end’ now. Vicki is running the Great North Run today; hopefully she’ll be able to walk tomorrow. Good luck to her, we’ll be watching to see if we can spot her although it would have been easier if she’d worn a banana outfit! The wedding plans are full steam ahead for next year, with the brides and bridesmaid dresses sorted, there’s only mother of the bride to suit and boot. I’ve been told a boiler suit won’t cut it! Claire’s having a change of career, `travelling the world’ is not as appealing when Ed is waiting at home. She’s started a P.G.C.E. course to become a secondary school teacher and hopefully will be able to keep order in the classroom as she did in China. 06.06.10 We
managed to get the sheep sheared yesterday before it rained again, i think we
have three nice days and then one horrible one, its rained all day
today! Fortunately the sheep don’t
mind us taking their coats off at this time of year even if it is raining
because they have a habit of getting on their backs and not been able to
right themselves for weight of wool before been sheared – another way for a
sheep to die - one of many! At
least the silage and hay fields are looking healthier than they did, with the
cold wet winter and the cold dry spring the grass was refusing to grow but
now it won’t be long before we can get to work, although Keiths gone to
France for a couple of days on a study tour of cattle farms – at least that’s
what he told me! 07.04.10 Finally the grass is
greening and the birds are starting to sing again. Our Lapwings and Kites are
out in force, hopefully nesting locally. It’s been a long winter but I’m sure
the summer’s going to make up for it – fingers crossed! Claire’s on her way home from yet another trip this time to Uganda. Vicki and Shak have eaten all her Easter Eggs but we haven’t told her yet. 07.02.10 No excuses – i should have
updated this before now. In October i went to Australia whilst Claire was
there, well you have to take advantage of your offspring! We had a wonderful
time in Perth, Brisbane and down the gold coast to Sydney, although i
wouldn’t have missed it for the world, its always nice to come home and i’m
not the emigrating sort. The snow we had around Christmas was timed to perfection, our girls were both home with respective partners at different times and all reverted to childhood when faced with a hill and a sledge! Although Kip wasn’t too keen to sit on anyone's knee. Vicki and Shak announced their engagement which we’re all very pleased about, with a wedding to look forward to next year. 08.09.09 As
the summer ends and the nights start to pull in (all too soon), i think we
have had a sucessful season! The cottages have been almost fully booked and
thats from a standing start in May!
The girls are still in London, Vicki’s just got another promotion and
is well on her way to Sir Humpreys job and Claire is on her way to Australia
for a month as she’s now in charge of the Melbourne office. As for the Bbq summer we were promised -
Keith still has some combining to, hopefully this week the weather will allow
us to finish. On a sad note, we lost Owen this summer, she had a tumor and we
had her put to sleep. She’d had 14
good years with us, for a farm cat thats not too bad. 29.06.09 As
you can see, our web site has changed! Shak’s done a wonderful job with it,
although we do have one or two teathing problems, you may have struggled to
open it directly from the web address, but this will be solved as soon as
Shak and i find out how!! 29.5.09 I'm so pleased with the
bookings we're getting - all the hard work was worth it! Please look out for
our new style website coming soon, Vicki's boyfriend is designing it for us
I’m sure it will be excellent! 12.5.09 Well our first guests haven't
told me we've forgotten anything so that's a good sign! Everything must be
working ok and the lawn has been mown for the first time (anyone who knows me
will wonder how I managed to leave it for so long!) 27.3.09 We have our first booking!
The cottages are going to be Christened on 2nd May. I think Keith will break
out the champagne and celebrate the end of two years hard labour. 09.3.09 At last we're on the home
run! The cottages have bathrooms kitchens and lights!! There's the paving
outside to be done and little things like beds and sofa's and flat screen
digital TV’s! We're getting there! 30.1.09 We hope to start building the
kitchens in the holiday cottages tomorrow; I've been painting all week and am
looking forward to the change! I think with the under floor heating the
cottages will be the best place to be next week! 16.1.09 With luck and a lot more hard
work, I think we're on schedule to open in May - although Keith, ever the
optimist, thinks next Christmas! I think he's joking! 17.9.08 Well as you can tell, we've
been busy! The holiday cottages are coming along, the roofs on, windows and
doors fixed and the under floor heating system in place. The electrician is
here for the first fix - you see I know all the jargon!! 17.9.08 The girls are fully employed
now, both in London. Claire works for an expedition company in charge of
China (obviously) Vietnam and Nepal. Vicki works in Whitehall, trying to keep
the Government in order (and failing! She tries very hard) 07.6.07 Well I think summers here?
You can never be sure with our English weather! Claire's back from Beijing,
fluent in Chinese and job hunting. Vicki graduates from Durham at the end of
the month with a job in London waiting for her. We're proud of them
both. 24.4.07 The weathers been wonderful
for lambing this time, the sheep all wanted to lamb at Easter so to say we
were busy is an understatement! But we are rewarded now when you watch the
lambs gather in gangs to run round the fields when their mothers aren't
watching. 23.1.07 It’s hard to believe that
2006 has come and gone! My friend Pat told me I had to update my blog so here
goes. We finally got our planning consent on the Old Cart Shed, which is
going to be two one bedroomed holiday lets. They will have wonderful
views. 23.1.07 This winter the weathers been
dreadful, the sheep are water proof but even they think enough’s enough!
Although my new hobby isn't suffering, I’m a mole catcher now (it was either
us or them!), the fields are already looking greener not brown and
hilly! 19.9.06 Like the swallows our
daughters have left us once again, the oldest is back in China at Beijing Uni learning Chinese (as you do) and the youngest one is
starting her last year at Durham Uni with hopes of
good results next June (well we hope so). |
